Roma Guillon Le Thière was the daughter of a military officer who had fought at Waterloo. She was also a granddaughter of Madame Sophie Michau-'d Egville, a dancing teacher who worked in Brighton and functioned as Mistress of the Ceremonies for George IV and William IV. Le Thière debuted in 1865 at the New Royalty Theatre in Soho, London as Emilia in Shakespeare's "Othello". During the following years she appeared at several London theatres and shared the stage with Henry Irving, Ellen Terry and other famous actors of that time. In 1869 she produced her own play "All for Money" at the Haymarket Theatre with Henry Irving, Amy Sedgwick and Jane Stephens as actors. This was no success. In 1878 she was the first Marquise de Rio Zares in "Diplomacy", an adaptation of Victorien Sardou's "Dora". Madge Kendal was Dora. She continued her career until the 1890s and in 1893 she created the part of Lady Caroline Pontefract in Oscar Wilde's "A Woman of No Importance". She died in 1903 in London. Events |
| 19/4/1893 | Premiere of Oscar Wilde's "A Woman of No Importance" at the Haymarket Theatre in London. The play was directed by Herbert Beerbohm Tree. Arthur Balfour and Joseph Chamberlain were in the audience. The play ran for 113 performances and closed on 16 August. Original performers included Herbert Beerbohm Tree, E. Holman Clark, Henry Kemble, Fred Terry, Julia Neilson, Rose Leclercq, Roma le Thière, Helen Maud Holt and Fanny Mary Whitehead (Mrs Beere).
