Fred Terry was the son of the actors Benjamin Terry (1817-1896) and his wife Sarah, born Ballard (1819-1892). He was a younger brother of the far more famous actress Ellen Terry. Fred ebuted in 1880 at the Lyceum Theatre in "Twelfth Night", next to Ellen. In 1882 he played several parts in Shakespeare plays. From 1890 until 1894 he was a member of Herbert Beerbohm Tree's company. In 1900 he married the actress Julia Neilson and they performed together between 1900 and 1930. The actors Dennis Neilson-Terry and Phyllis Neilson-Terry are their children. In 1912 he fell seriously ill, but after he recovered in 1913 he continued his career. | 19/4/1893 | Premiere of Oscar Wilde's "A Woman of No Importance" at the Haymarket Theatre in London. The play was directed by Herbert Beerbohm Tree. Arthur Balfour and Joseph Chamberlain were in the audience. The play ran for 113 performances and closed on 16 August. Original performers included Herbert Beerbohm Tree, E. Holman Clark, Henry Kemble, Fred Terry, Julia Neilson, Rose Leclercq, Roma le Thière, Helen Maud Holt and Fanny Mary Whitehead (Mrs Beere).
