Marie Thérèse Bourgoin was the daughter of the shoemaker Edme Bourgoing. Her mother was Marie Badois. She learned to dance when she was six years old and a few years later, she took acting lessons. She debuted on 13 September 1799 at the Théâtre français in Paris as Amélie in Gabriel Marie Legouvé's "Fénelon". In the same year she played the title part in Racine's "Iphigénie". In 1802 she became a member of the Comédie-Française, where Marie Dumesnil was her teacher. She played many leading roles in plays by Racine and others In 1808 Napoleon brought a troupe of actors to Erfurt during the Congress of Erfurt to entertain the Russian delegation. Csar Alexander I liked her performances and on request of Napoleon she travelled back with him to Russia. On 26 July 1809 she appeared at St. Petersburg in Voltaire's "Nanina". She had an affair with Alexander I and stayed in Russia for two years. After her return to France, she stayed with the Comédie-Française until 1829. By that time, she had performed over fifty roles. She was an outspoken legitimist and her opinions on the Bourbon restoration were not always welcomed by her colleagues and by the public. In 1828 Henri François Riesener painted her.
