Henri François Riesener was the son of the German cabinetmaker Jean Henri Riesener (1734-1806). He was taught miniature painting by Antoine Vestier (1740-1824) before he was taught in the studios of François-André Vincent and Jacques Louis David. He first exhibited ast the Salon in 1793 but during the next five years he served in the army. After that he became a portrait painter and a miniature painter. In 1806 he painted empress Joséphine and he drew Napoleon during a luncheon. After the fall of the Empire he left for Russia in 185 without his wife and son. He lived in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Warsaw until 1822. In Warsaw Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich (1779-1831) was his patron and he painted his mistress, Josephine Friedrichs (1780-1824). After his return to France in 1822 he gave his son Léon (1808-1878) drawing lessons. Léon became a painter as well. He bought a country house in Frépillon, Val d'Oise. He died in 1828 in Paris.
