Alexander Marshall Peebles was the son of the paper manufacturer Alexander Marshall Peebles (1810-1861). His mother was Euphemia Rankine. He worked for Thomas Smith, the County Surveyor of Herfordshire, before he became assistant to Henry Baker, the Surveyor of St Pancras, London. He worked as an architect and he held the positions of District Surveyor to North St Marylebone and later of Hampstead. From 1887 he was Architect to the Corporation of the City of London. In 1867 he became an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects and in 1879 he became Fellow of that institute. He died in 1891 and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.
