Jeanne Lanvin was the daughter of press employee Bernard Constant Lanvin. Her mother Sophie Blanche, born Deshayes, was a seamstress. She had ten siblings. Her grandfather, the typesetter Firmin Lanvin, helped Victor Hugo to escape from Paris in 1851 during the coup d'état by Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. She worked for a hat shop that sent her to Barcelona, where she befriended the seamstress and stylist Caroline Montagne (1851-1941). After her return to Paris, she opened a small fashion shop at the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, followed by a boutique on the rue Boissy d'Anglas. By 1889 she sold collections of her own design, at that time still mostly hats. In 1897 she married the Italian nobleman Emilio di Pietro. In 1897 their daughter Madeleine was born. The marriage ended in 1903. By that time, she was listed in the Annuaire de la Mode française and in 1907 her fashion house became a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. In that year she married Xavier Mélet, the former editor of conservative newspapers. In the1920 her company grew strongly and in 1924 perfumes were added to haute couture. In 1927 Jeanne Lanvin SA was founded and many branches were opened. In 1928 she received the Légion d'Honneur. She died in 1946 in Paris. Family • Daughter: Polignac, Marie Blanche de |
