Alexander Classen studied in Giessen en Berlin. In 1864 he received his doctorate in Berlin. After working as an assistant he had his own laboratory there from 1867. In 1870 he became a lecturer at the Aachen University of Technology. In 1878 he was appointed professor of analytical chemistry in Aachen. In 1882 he became professor of inorganic and analytical chemistry. He was a leading figure i nthe field of electroanalysis. He worked on the electrolytic gravimetry of metals and using a rotating anode he developed a rapid method in 1897. From 1894 until his retirement in 1914 he was the director of the Eletrochemical Institute. He published "Handbuch der analytischen Chemie" (two volumes, 1922-1924). |
