Rowena Farre was born in London or in India. She was the daughter of Brigadier John Macready (1887-1957) and Marguerite Mary Milling (1890-1982). John MacReady was the grandson of the actor William Charles MacReady. John served in India and Rowena probably spent her early childhood there. During the Second World War she served as a WAAF officer from 1942. She was stationed at a radar station in Pembrokeshire, Wales. She travelled in the Far East and visited Australia. By 1953 she was estranged from her parents. In 1957 she published "Seal Morning" under the name of Rowena Farre. It was about the life of the writer and her aunt Miriam in Scotland. It was doubted if the book was strictly autobiographical or should be read as an autobiographical novel. Farre was a very private person, and she had disappeared from her lodgings just before "Seal Morning" was published. After it became a success her publisher Hutchinson had a hard time in tracing her. Her later books "A Time from the World" (1962) and "The Beckoning Land" (1969) were less successful. She died in 1979 in Canterbury. Her remains were cremated and the urn with her ashes was place adjacent to the coffin of Charles MacReady in the catacombs of Kensal Green Cemetery in London.
