Auguste Maillard was educated at the École des Beaux-Arts by Alexandre Falguière. In later years he became a teacher there himself. From 1885 he exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. He won a medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Maillard created monuments for French cities, war memorials and busts and portrait medallions of prominent figures. In 1904 he created the funerary monument to Augusta Holmès at the Saint-Louis cemetery Versailles. He created a monument to Jean Honoré Fragonard for Grasse in 1907. In 1913 he created the bust for the tomb of Catulle Mendès at Montparnasse cemetery. Mendés had been the lover of Holmès for a long time and they had five children together. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1907. Towards the end of his life, Maillard exhibited at the Salon d'hiver from 1942 to 1944. In 1944 he was killed in front of his house by a bullet from a machine gun from an SS car during an attack on the town hall of Neuilly.
