John Hills was the son of James Halls of Neechindipore, a landowner and planter in Bengal. His mother Charlotte Mary was a grand daughter of the French general Corderan. He was educated in Edinburgh. In 1852 he entered the East India Company's College at Addiscombe and was further educated in Chatham. In 1856 he was sent to Bombay where he saw action at the capture of Mohumra. In 1857 he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1859 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburg. In 1863 he was promoted to captain and he became executive engineer in Rajputana in 1865. In 1867 he was a member of the expedition of Sir Robert Napier. From 1871 to 1883 he commanded the Bombay sappers and miners at Kirkee. After he distinguished himself in the defense of Kandahar he was knighted. From 1886 to 1887 he served in Birma. He retired with the rank of major-general. He never married and he died in 1902 in London. |
