André Wormser was the son of Abraham Wormser and his wife, born Julie Hayem. He studied at the Conservatory in Paris where Antoine François Marmontel and Grançois Bazin were his teachers. He won several prizes before he won the grand prix de Rome in 1875 for his cantata "Clytemnestre". This earned him a residence at the Villa Medici in Rome at the same time as Albert Besnard, who painted his portrait in 1877. He composed pantomines, symphonic music, piano pieces and further works. In 1890 his pantomine "L'Enfant prodigu" was staged in Paris and it was his biggest success. He was also active as a music critic for the L'indépendant and he collected art. |
