Jakob Levy Moreno was the son of the Sephardic merchant Moreno Nissim Levy. His family fled to Vienna to escape pogroms, and he grew up there. He studied philosophy and medicine, funding his education by working as a private tutor. In Vienna, he was a tutor to Elisabeth Bergner and through him, she became interested in an acting career. He developed the method of psychodrama. From 1918 to 1925, he worked as a physician at the Vöslauer Kammgarnfabrik. At the same time, he maintained contacts with Expressionist artists and published the journal "Daimon". In 1925, he traveled to the US and remained there. In 1928, he married the child psychologist Beatrice Beecher. He conducted research at Sing Sing Prison and wrote his major work, "Who Shall Survive?". In 1936, he took over a clinic in Beacon, where he further developed psychodrama. He developed group psychotherapy.
