Louis Appian was the son and the only pupil of the painter Adolphe Appian (1818-1898). He was educated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon from 1879. In 1885 he won a scholarship and in Paris Alexandre Cabanel was his teacher. He did not manage to win the Prix de Rome in 1887. In 1886 he first exhibited in Lyon and from 1888 he showed his work in Paris as well. His work was reasonably successful, but he could not match the popularity of the work of his father. His health was never strong, but after a trip to Algeria in 1895 it detoriated quickly. He suffered from tuberculosis and died at the age of 34 in 1896, two years before his father.
