Ben Tieber travelled to the USA at an early age, and he oversaw vaudeville shows in New York. After his return to Europe, he took charge of the Wiener Colosseum variety theatre in 1899, but he was replaced by Carl Blasel that same year. Since he held a four-year contract and there were no grounds for dismissal, he received a substantial severance payment, which he used to lease the Apollo Theatre in Vienna. Within a year he was able to purchase it. He converted the venue into a variety theatre, and it soon became a formidable competitor to the long-established Ronacher Theatre, perhaps because it specialized in 'nudity'. He directed the Apollo until health problems forced him to lease it to another company in 1923. In 1911, Tieber purchased the Otto Wagner Villa in the Hütteldorf district from the architect Otto Wagner, after Wagner had built another villa next to it. Wagner was his neighbour until he died in 1918. Tieber lived in the villa for the rest of his life. In 1925 he died in Vienna.
