Josef Pembaur was the son of a town councilor. First, he studied law in Innsbruck, but he switched to music. He studied composition and organ with Anton Bruckner at the Conservatory in Vienna. In Munich he studied under Giusppe Buonamici, Franz Wüllner, Josef Gabriel Rheinberger and Julius Hey. In Munich Peter Cornelius became a friend. In 1874 he became the director of the Musikverein in Innsbruck and this had a positive effect on the musical life in that city. At the school of the Musikverein he taught singing, piano, music theory and organ. His students included Ludwig Thuille, Martin Spörr and Josef Prantl. In 1912, he acquired the building of the present-day Tyrolean State Conservatory for the Musikverein. Pembaur composed mostly male choruses and songs. His compositions show the influence of Robert Schumann. He also wrote treatises and essays. Gustav Klimt painted his portrait in 1890. In 1900 he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph. He died in 1923 in Innsbruck.
