Walter Courvoisier was the son of the surgeon Ludwig George Courvoisier (1843-1918) and his wife Leopoldine, born Sachs (1849-1905). He studied medicin, but after his promotion he went to Munich in 1902 to study music. He was a student of Selmar Bagge in Basel and of Ludwig Thuille in Munich. In 1909 he married Thuille's daughter Hedwig. Courvoisier wrote three operas and many other works. At the Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich he taught theory and composition. In 1906 and 1907 he conducted the Kaim Orchestra several times. In 1931 he died in Locarno of tuberculosis while he was taking a cure.He was buried at the Waldfriedhof in Munich in the grave of Thuille, who had died in 1907.
