Sandór Wagner was born in Pest as the son of the notary and judge Sándor Wagner (1800-1843) and Maria Katharina born Raits (b.1803). He studied with the history painter Henrik Weber (1818-1866). From 1854 he was a student of Karl von Blaas at the Academy in Vienna. His fellow student Alexander von Liezen-Mayer became a close friend. Together they continued their studies in Munich where Wagner studied under Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1888). He created his first monumental painting "Die Selbstaufopferung des Titusz Dugovics" in 1859. In 1864 he married Bertha Oldenbourg, the daughter of a publisher from Munich. In 1864 and 1866 he travelled to Italy and Spain. In 1866 the Empress Elisabeth sat for him. He was a member of the circle of painters around Franz von Lenbach. He worked as an assistant to Hermann Anschütz at the Art Academy in Munich before he became a professor there himself. His pupils included Mihály von Munkácsy. For his services, he became Ritter von Wagner in 1898. After his death in 1919 a posthumous exhibition was organized at the Glaspalast in Munich in 1920.
