Rosemarie Schuder was the daughter of the dramatist Kurt Schuder (1884-1969). After she attended a girls' school, she worked as a journalist for "Tägliche Rundschau" and "Neue Zeit". She joined the CDU of Eastern Germany in 1951. In 1955 her novel "Der Ketzer von Naumburg" was a success. From 1957 to 1959 she travelled to Italy to study. In 1958 she married the author Rudolf Hirsch and with him she published writings on the persecution of the Jews, including "Der gelbe Fleck - Wurzeln und Wirkungen des Judenhasses in der deustchen Geschichte" (1987). She wrote many historical novels, mostly about themes from German history. In 1958 she won the Heinrich-Mann-Preis, in 1976 the Lion-Feuchtwanger-Preis and in 1988 the Goethe-Preis der Stadt Berlin. She won the Nationalpreis der DDR three times, in 1969, 1978 and 1988. In 1990 she left the Ost-CDU. Rudolf Hirsch died in 1998 and Rosemarie lived until 2018 before she died in Berlin.
