Anton von Werner was the son of the master carpenter Friedrich Alexander von Werner and his wife Maria Magdalena, born Kayser. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1860. In 1862 he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he was taught by Wilhelm Schirmer, Louis des Coudres, Adolf Schroedter and Carl Friedrich Lessing. He became friends with Joseph Victor Scheffel, who introduced him to Grand Duke Friedrich of Baden, whose wife Louise was sister of Crown Prince Wilhelm Friedrich of Prussia. His illustrations of Scheffel's work were a success. He visited Paris, where he studied the works of Ingres, Delacroix, Meisonnier and Cogniet. In 1868 he won a prizre for "Conradin of Staufen and Frederick of Baden and Luther before Cajetan" and this enabled him to study in Rome for a year. In 1870 he experienced the end of the Franco-Prussian War at the headquaters of the Third Army. In January Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm summoned him to Versailles to document the proclamation of the German Empire. This made him famous and his work sold well. In the 1880s he painted many portraits, including "Bismarck am Bundesratstisch" in 1888. In 1871 he married Malvine Schroedter (1847-1901), the daughter of his teacher Adolf Schroedter and Alwine Schroedter, who was a painter as well. They had six children. In 1874 he became a full member of the Prussian Academy of Arts and in 1875 he became the director of the new Hochschule für Bildende Künste (College of Fine Arts) in Berlin. He would hold his position for fourty years until his death. Von Werner was known for his conservative views. When he drafted a statute for the Hochschule, he decided that no female students would be admitted. He knew the emperor since he had given him drawing lessons as a child and now the emperor supported him in his rejection of modern art. From 1887 to 1895 he was the president of the Verein Berliner Künstler and again from 1899 to 1901 and from 1906 to 1907. He died in Berlin in 1915.
