Rodolph Auguste d'Ornano was the son of Count Phillipe Antoine d'Ornano and Countress Maria Walewska. His mother was the former mistress of Napoleon and the former wife of Count Colonna-Walewski. His parents had settled in Liège after the fall of Napoleon. Maria died in 1818 of a kidney disease. Count Alexandre Joseph Colonna-Walewski, Maria's son by Napoleon, was his half-brother. Ornano attended the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr. When he was eighteen years old he entered into the service of the diplomatic corps of King Louis-Philippe. He worked at the embassies in Dresden and Westminster bofore he was removed from diplomatic service because of his relaltons with his cousin Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. On 16 June 1845 he married Aline Élisabeth, Marquise de Voyer d'Argenson (1826-1899) in Tours. They had six children. After Louis became president, Ornano became prefect of the Yonne Department. But he was not fit for the task, and Louis, now emperor Napoleon III, forced his resignation. From 1853 he was Deputy of Yonne to the Legislative Assembly and Napoleon made him also Chamberlain and master of ceremonies at his court. He was only 48 years old when he died in 1865.
