Henry Crabb Robinson was educated at small private schools. In 1790 he was articled to an attorney in Colchester. There he witnessed one of John Wesley's last sermons. In 1796 he started working at the office of a solicitor in Chancery Lane, London. In 1798 he inherited a substantial yearly income and he decided to go abroad. He studied in Germany between 1800 and 1805. During that time he met Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland. He became a war correspondent for The Times in Altona in 1807 and during the war in the Peninsula he worked in Galicia. In 1809 he returned to London and in 1813 he was called to the bar, becoming the leader of the Eastern circuit. In 1828 he retired and he became a popular society figure afterwards. In 1829 he became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and in that year he befriended the novelist Sarah Burney. His diaries describe his friendships with Blake, Coleridge and Wordsworth. He wrote essays on Blake and Swinburne. Robinson never married. He died in London in 1867 and he was buried in Highgate Cemetery next to the grave of his friend Edwin Wilkins Field. His diaries were published in 1869.
