Pier Angeli was born Anna Maria Pierangeli. She was the daughter of Luigi Pierangeli and Enrichetta, born Romiti. Her twin sister was the actress Maria Pavan. She lived in Rome during the Second World War and her war experiences impressed her deeply. After director Léonide Moguy noticed her, she debuted in his movie "Domani è troppo tardi" ("Tomorrow will be too late") in 1950, playing alongside Vittorio de Sica. It was a great success and it won her the Silver Ribbon for Best Actress. MGM offered her a contract and in 1951 she appeared in Fred Zinneman's "Teresa". During the shooting of "Histoire de trois amours" in 1953 she started a relationship with Kirk Douglas. In the same year she replaced Ava Gardner in "Sombrero". During the filming of "The Silver Chalice" (1954) she met James Dean, who was filming "East of Eden" at the time. A passionate love affair followed. But her mother disapproved of the relationship and she ended it reluctantly. She married the actor Vic Damone, but there were rumors that she may have continued to see Dean until his death in 1955. She would say later that Dean was the love of her life. She had a son with Damone, Perry (1955-2014), but they divorced in 1958. In 1962 she married the Italian composer Armando Trovajoli (1917-2013) and she had another son with him in 1963, Andrew Howard Rugantino. In 1969 they separated. During the 1960s she lived and worked in Europe and often appeared under her birth name Anna Maria Pierangeli. In 1960 she played in Guy Green's "The Angry Silence" alongside her friend Richard Attenborough. In 1963 she played Lot's wife in Robert Aldrich's "Sodom and Gomorrah". She had a small part in Ken Annakin's war movie "Battle of the Bulge" (1965). After her separation from Rugantino she returned to California. There she lived with her friend Debby Reyolds for a while before she found an apartment in Beverly Hills. On 10 September 1970 she was found dead at home. She had died from a drug overdose.
